Welcome to Ceramics!

How does Ceramics work?
Ceramics is right across the hall from our Enrollment Room. This class focuses on hand building functional and sculptural ceramics pieces. For information about our Pottery Wheel workshops, please check out our Eventbrite page.
In this class, you will learn all of the different techniques used to create hand built work—pinching, coiling, slab rolling, and more! When you first arrive, the instructor will ask you about what your goals and interests are. Then, you will make a sketch of what you want to create—proper planning is very important to make sure your project is successful. You may also want to bring photos for inspiration.
For many of our students, this is the first time they are working in ceramics. Don't be discouraged if your project doesn't look how you intended—failure is an important part of the learning process! As you learn, you will get better and your artwork will reflect the progress you have made. It just takes time!
It takes at least three weeks to complete a ceramics artwork. First, you will sculpt your piece, afterwards it must dry completely before being fired in our kiln (a super hot oven). Second, you will paint your artwork with glaze, a special paint for ceramics. The work then goes back in the kiln to cook a second time. Once the work is fired a second time, it is ready to be picked up. The instructor will post kiln firing dates in the classroom, which will tell you when your artwork will be ready to pick up. This can take some time, so be prepared!
All students are expected to clean up after themselves. This means wiping down your tools, the board used, the table at your seat, and putting all of the tools used back where they belong.
At LSA, we only fire work that was created at LSA in our kiln. This helps us protect our kiln and the work of all of our students. Firing a ceramics kiln is tricky, and incorrect materials can cause major damage to our high end equipment.
